The article studies the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technologies in order to increase the safety of construction operations in conditions of the implementation of complex infrastructural projects. The construction of the Lusail Stadium, the main venue of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, is considered a practical example. The relevance of the study is conditioned by the high level of occupational injuries in the construction industry, inadequate efficiency of traditional safety management methods, and the need for digital transformation of risk management processes.
The research methodology of the study is based on the triangulation approach including the analysis of a specific case of the Lusail Stadium construction, the comparative analysis of efficiency of BIM technologies compared to traditional methods, and the SWOT analysis of the potential of information modeling in the contest of occupational injuries reduction.
The study results show that using BIM technologies significantly transforms the safety ensuring processes via four key mechanisms. Virtual modelling using 4D simulation helps identify potential hazards at the design stage. Precision manufacturing of structures using laser scanning minimizes the need for hazardous adjustments at heights. The integrated system of structural monitoring ensures continuous assessment of structural integrity in the real-time mode. Augmented reality technologies increase the safety training efficiency for personnel.
The SWOT analysis reveals that, while BIM offers significant advantages for preventive safety management, there are implementation barriers including significant financial requirements, lack of experts, and organizational inertia. Nevertheless, the study confirms that BIM integration with the newest technologies establishes a comprehensive ecosystem of construction safety management that significantly outperforms traditional approaches in complex projects and a foundation for the transition from reactive to proactive risk management strategies.
