The study is dedicated to analyzing the efficiency of protective disconnection devices in conditions of mine power grids that utilize frequency converters. The relevance of the topic is conditioned by the increased requirements for electrical safety when operating variable-frequency electric drives that generate higher harmonics and alter the nature of leakage currents. Within the framework of the study, a lab installation simulating a mine grid of voltage reaching 1140 V has been implemented, and a set of experiments using protective disconnection of various types has been conducted. It has been established that A-type protective disconnection devices sensitive to alternating currents demonstrate a significant increase in actuation time when the output voltage frequency of frequency converters is decreased (from 0,045 s at 10 Hz and 30 mA), whereas at the frequency of 5 Hz, these can fail to operate. B-type devices designed for AC and DC have shown a more stable operation, although they also tended to increase the actuation time at lower frequencies (below 0,035 on the same conditions). Additionally, the impact of higher harmonics has been detected: the amplitude of the third harmonics at 5 Hz has reached 20 % of the main harmonics, which reduces the reliability of the A-type protective disconnection devices. The resistance to actuation and its dependence on the voltage, frequency, and external factors such as humidity and dust content have also been analyzed. The results have confirmed that standard protective disconnection devices developed for industrial frequency grids do not always ensure reliable protection in mine conditions, and the development of specialized devices adapted to distorted current waveforms and environmental factors is required.
