The study considers the issue of increasing electrical safety in electrical grids up to 1 kV with a solid-earthed neutral relevant for industrial facilities. The main attention is paid to the impact of grounding system parameters on contact voltage, that is, one of the key factors of electric shock risk. The experimental part has utilized a model of a fragment of an industrial facility's grid, including a transformer substation and workshop equipment. The impact of leakage resistance (from 0.1 to 20 Ohms), re-grounding resistance (from 0.5 to 10 Ohms), pulse overvoltages, and harmonic distortions on contact voltage has been studied. It is established that the decrease in leakage resistance to 0.1 Ohms can increase contact voltage up to 125 V, which exceeds the permissible safety levels. It has also been detected that the growth of re-grounding resistance from 0.5 to 10 Ohms causes an increase in contact voltage by more than 2.5 times. Pulse overvoltages momentarily increase contact voltage up to 250 V, whereas the third harmonic with 15 % amplitude compared to the main frequency increases it to 75 V ceteris paribus. Heat monitoring of grounding conductor connections has been performed; as a result, areas with increased temperature (up to +15 °C above the background) have been detected, which indicates potential contact defects. The obtained data helped establish dependencies between grounding system parameters and electric shock risk as well as propose recommendations on their reduction. The developed methodological approaches can be used during design, operation, and diagnostics of grounding systems in grids up to 1 kV.
