The problem of fire risk assessment for chemical labs and hazard analysis in them has been considered.
According to the authors, chemical labs are objects of increased fire hazard as large volumes of flammable and combustible substances are stored and handled in the labs. Emergencies that occurred in labs on the territory of the Russian Federation described by the authors confirm the necessity of timely fire risk assessment and management in order to ensure the safety of laboratory technicians and prevent negative consequences for the environment.
The chemical lab of the non-organic substances and electrochemical processes department of the Tushino Complex of the Mendeleyev University of Chemical Technology has been selected for the examination. A unit for hydrogen peroxide production by the electrochemical method was installed in the lab; the size of the unit is planned to be increased to the scale of an industrial enterprise shortly.
A five-stage method described in the Federal Law of 22.07.2008 № 123-FZ has been used as an approach to fire risk assessment. For hazard analysis, the HAZID method has been chosen. Prior to the HAZID session, a hazard analysis for the object of examination.
The HAZID session has been conducted based on the example of a hydrogen peroxide production unit by electrochemical method. As a result, a list of identified hazards has been compiled, and recommendations to prevent or minimize the consequences have been developed.
The hazards identified are used to assess potential threats via failure trees. The «Failure Tree» module is implemented in the RizEks-2 software product developed by the scientific risk study center RIZIKON.
The software product Fenix+ is proposed to be used for individual fire risk assessment.
Therefore, it has been concluded that this approach to fire risk assessment is applicable not only in the labs of the Mendeleyev University of Chemical Technologies but also in other technical schools, considering their specific features.
